Products I Geek About : Makeup Edition
I have a love/hate relationship with makeup. Since I was 13 years old I have loved make up, I love getting new products, actually applying them, and being able to experiment with something that isn't permanent is the best! However, my hate for makeup is skin deep, literally. I break out so easily, my skin is like a 14 year old boy, and heaven forbid my hormones would ever be in check long enough to clear anything up. So because of this I have some pretty specific/fantastic products I use to keep my skin from breaking out while still rocking my awesome look!
Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation Primer
I was introduced to this primer by the artist who did my wedding hair and makeup. This primer is the best I have ever used, I never need to use a lot so the $35 price tag seems a bit more manageable when I can space its use out over a few months. Also this doesn't make me break out or leave that heavy feeling some primers can give you, even if you use a little too much.
Benefit Hello Flawless Liquid Foundation
It took me FOREVER to find a good liquid foundation that worked well with my skin. This oil free formula actually moisturizes as well, so I never get that dry flaky look. Plus with the added SPF you can use a lighter sunscreen with your facial lotion, never have that sunscreen smell on your face again!
Clinique Clearing Concealer
I just recently picked up this gem, and I really like it so far. My skin only reacts well to Salicylic Acid acne treatments (everything else seems to dry my skin right up) so I am usually on the look out for products with this because the less build up the better!
Bare Minerals Blemish Remedy Powder
This foundation is another new product for me, I have worn Bare Minerals makeup since I was in high school - though I don't wear the amount of powder this brand tells you to use - and started noticing that the Matte or Original formulas sort of lock everything in and with the thickness of this powder I was finally beginning to understand why my break-outs would never go away. This too has Salicylic Acid in it, and in combination with my other products I see less and less acne bumbs at the end of the day when I take my makeup off, just living the dream over here.
Eye Brow Arsenal
My eyebrows have become my pride and joy, I didn't start really taking care of my brows until last year when I came across the you tube video from Jaclyn Hill that changed my face! Video Here Since then I don't normally leave my house without my brows done. I have thin brows which are also a lighter brown, and this creates a bit of a problem for a red head.
I have used 1 Anastasia Brow Wiz Pencil for a few years now, and while they don't always last as long as I'd like, I don't know if I will ever use anything else. I will also continue to defend the $21 price tag to my husband until I'm dead.
I picked up 2 Sonia Kashuk Brow Pencil in Taupe because of Jaclyn's advise to use a lighter color to fill in a bit and this color works out perfectly, not too dark for the inner brow.
3 e.l.f Clear Brow & Lash Mascara is $2, and you can use both sides, the eyelash and brow combs work great for keeping those fly-a ways down.
I used a normal fair tone eye primer at first and while I still like the colored primers, 4 NYX High Def Eye Shadow Base is really nice because its not really a color but a sort of shimmery highlighter and actually highlights the brow bone and the underside of the brow as called for in the video.
I have insanely long eyelashes and people always tell me that I am lucky, while I agree for the most part when I'm wearing glasses (80% of the time) they drive me crazy because they hit my lenses when I blink. So in order to combat this unique problem I have developed a system of mascaras.
1 Maybelline Lash Discovery is the first layer I apply, using the small brush I can usually coat every lash, making them look fuller in the end.
Second coat is 2 L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, I used to use a lengthening mascara for the second coat but realized this was moot for myself (if you don't have long lashes I would recommend it), so I switched to a volumizer with the gel brush to separate before the last coat.
3 Cover Girl Lash Blast 24 hour is the final step in my eyelash saga every morning, this mascara still has a gel brush but it puts on a thicker coat than the Million Lashes making it darker and stand out more. I normally only put one coat of each mascara on, but it creates a desired effect!
BH Cosmetics 88 Color Eyeshadow Palette
Don't get me wrong, I would probably buy all of the Urban Decay eyeshadow palette's if money were not an issue, but this is America and the struggle is real, so instead I got this awesome palette from BH Cosmetics for $15. They are now selling this for less than $10, and they have plenty more options to choose from.
Eye Liner Party
Liquid eyeliner is my jam, I like it so much more than pencils or even a pressed powder liner only because I am a perfectionist and it always* gives a clean line. 1 Almay Liquid Liner might seem like an odd choice when most of my makeup comes from sephora or Ulta not Walgreens, but for some reason I can handle this applicator so much better and also the brush doesn't spread out or get all goofy on me, and the liquid is easy to remove if you mess up but sticks around for when its on point! While this maybe a personal preference when it comes to liquid as it can be insanely difficult to master, I recommend this product none the less.
2 Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Pencil is my choice of pencil which I usually use on my water line, and occasionally for a smokey eye. This gel pencil goes on smoothly and EXTRA DARK, and for me the blacker the pencil the better!
* = not always
Nars Orgasm Blush
Another newbie to my collection, on top of the super awesome name this peach blush is perfect for my fair skin, and actually doesn't clash with my red hair, I have a peach lipstick that matches this and it looks flawless paired together.
Physicans Formula Multi-Colored Blush
I remember when I thought PF was the high end stuff because it was the most expensive makeup at Target. And while its still expensive, I use this "blush" as a sort of bronzer for my pale ass. I have my own little contour I do with my blush and bronzer, and I like this compact because its not overbearingly dark on me but gives enough color to actually show up, perfect for fair skin.
Below is an everyday look for me, using most of my above listed products, sometimes I wear less sometimes more, but I usually have some sort of wing or cat eye, makes me feel complete. CCW always as well.
