Crochet Cowl : Hunger Games Catching Fire
To say I am a newbie at crocheting was absolutely true, until I decided to be ambitious and tackle the cowl Katniss wear while in district 13 in Hunger Games Catching Fire. The second I saw her wearing that I knew I had to either buy it or make it, just like everyone else.
For Christmas I crocheted about 12 infinity scarves for my friends and family, so I figured all the hours of mindless half double crocheting to Gossip Girl would totally pay off. Now its not as hard as I'm making it seem, but it was for me because I altered the pattern a bit. In the pattern I have, the triangle piece in the front is called out to be knit in a herringbone pattern, and I can NOT knit, so I crocheted the triangle piece. I actually like how it came out, it still gives a contrast to the pattern but its more subtle, as you may see in the pattern.
I not only decided to make this cowl to level up my crocheting skills, but from what I paid I saved a literal shit-ton of money. I used Four(4) Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Yarn size 6 in Eggplant - the color actually might be my favorite part. I also had a coupon from Joann, because they rock at coupons for 25% off my order, which brought my yarn cost down to $23.97. And the pattern I scoured the internet for, is from Esty seller TwoofWandsShop at only $5.50, bringing my grand total to $29.47. If you search Etsy for Katniss Cowl, the pre-made versions sell for anywhere between $50 - $180, so even though I got insanely frustrated it was worth it! I love my cowl, it makes me like when it's cold outside just so I can wear it.
